For patient safety and for liability reasons, we administer the BCG only to patients on whom we have been able to perform a Mantoux test ourselves beforehand. This is because the BCG vaccine can lead to long-term skin problems at the site of BCG administration if a Mantoux test done beforehand is either performed incorrectly or interpreted incorrectly. We need to be able to stand over the quality of both Mantoux test administration and Mantoux test result interpretation in order to keep you safe from subsequent BCG vaccine complications.

The Mantoux test is done first and read 48 - 72 hours later. The BCG vaccine can be administered at the time the Mantoux is being read, as long as the Mantoux test result shows that you are eligible to receive the BCG vaccine.
