About Dr. Collins
I obtained my medical degree in Dublin, completed my postgraduate training to be a GP and became a partner in a General Practice in Ireland for a few years, before deciding to go to Africa in 1999.
I was sent by an Irish Aid Agency to Southern Sudan for a year, to a province (Bahr el Gazhal) struggling with an ongoing civil war, malnutrition and what seemed like every tropical disease in the book. I learned so much that I decided to spend a second year there.
I worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo (North Kivu/South Kivu/Kantanga) in 2002/3 and then joined an international medical aid agency for postings in the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville (2003/4), Sudan (West Darfur 2004/5), Central African Republic (2005/6) and Haiti (February/March 2010).
I have worked full-time in Tropical/Travel Medicine since returning to Dublin in 2006.
Other travel experience in tropical countries
In addition to the countries I have worked in abroad, I have been lucky enough to spend time in Thailand, Eritrea, Chad, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and the Dominican Republic.
